Citywide celebration launches new season in November
When the start of a new month rolls around, the focus is on fun in Palm Desert. First Weekend Palm Desert transforms our city—already renowned for its exciting special events and a lively arts scene—into a can’t-miss destination that’s packed with food, festivals and more.
First Weekend Palm Desert, held on the first weekend of the month from November through May, features much-anticipated events such as El Paseo Art Walk and the free docent-guided Palm Desert Public Art Tours. But it’s grown to include El Paseo Cruise Night, which packs the famed shopping street with auto enthusiasts who gather to watch the slow parade unfold before them. Galen First Fridays at the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert provide the hip counterpoint with free concerts in their sculpture garden ranging from indie-pop to alternative.
This November, to kick off the First Weekend season, there are two “can’t miss” events to put on your calendar. Both are held on Friday, November 2, but they’re conveniently located across the street from each other so you don’t need to choose—just morph from one to the other.
Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert kicks off its Galen First Fridays season with a Día de Los Muertos celebration. Starting at 4 p.m., the museum will feature Day of the Dead art activities and dance performances by Ballet Folklorico Sabor a Mi Terra from College of the Desert. Admission is free.
Meanwhile, Westfield Palm Desert will be rocking with Street, a free fest celebrating urban-inspired art, music, food and fashion. The Deck, the third story of the west parking garage at Westfield, will be transformed with art installations, crafts and games, a Stuft Pizza pop-up restaurant, tequila and whiskey bars, craft beer, and a vendor area. The highlight of the evening is the six hours of continuous music from local and regional bands including The Yip Yops and The Flusters. Held under the stars from 5-11 p.m., the event is free of charge and all ages are welcome.
In the months to come, First Weekend Palm Desert offers up a variety of events celebrating everything from wellness (LiveWell Festival, January 5) to wildflowers (Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival, March 2). But if it’s a party you’re after, the Holiday Celebration on December 7 at The Gardens on El Paseo and Swing ‘N Hops on February 2 each feature live music that will have your toes tapping.
Discovering something new to do in Palm Desert is as easy as visiting the First Weekend Palm Desert website for a complete listing of all the related events. Each First Weekend includes a “featured event” that’s worthy of being the centerpiece of your weekend’s itinerary.
So…first things first! Plan to join us in Palm Desert for First Weekend and find some fun of your own.
