When the City of Palm Desert embarked on transforming San Pablo Avenue from a vehicle focused thruway into the heart of a revitalized city center, the design always envisioned a space for community gatherings and events. With the first phase of the San Pablo streetscape improvements completed at a time when events are limited, two different markets have become the first events to try that space on for size.

The Certified Farmers’ Market was the first to make the move to San Pablo, in December 2020. Sponsored by the Palm Springs Cultural Center, the Certified Farmers’ Market has been a perennial favorite in the community for more than a decade. The market provides residents and visitors a mid-valley, midweek opportunity to shop for a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables, and other artisanal products. The market’s nearly two-dozen farms are regionally based, most within 100 miles of Palm Desert. In addition to the wonderful produce, the Certified Farmers’ Market offers a mouthwatering array of other products such as farm raised meats, eggs, cheeses, honey, organic coffee, prepared foods, and more.

The Palm Desert Certified Farmers’ Market is open every Wednesday morning in season (October through April) from 8am-12:30pm. For more information, please visit www.certifiedfarmersmarkets.org, or call 844-7FARMCV (844-732-7628).

New to San Pablo is the Sunday Market, a project by the date farmer-restaurateur team behind CV Harvest Box. CV Harvest Box is a fresh produce delivery enterprise, born out of the pandemic, created to provide sustainability to local growers who found their business slipping away as restaurants shuttered.

Now those same growers and other local businesses are bringing their products straight to San Pablo at the Sunday Market, creating new opportunities and boosting our area’s economy. This monthly event will occur on the last Sunday of the month, 8am to noon, from February through May 2021.

For more information on the Sunday Market, visit the CV Harvest Box website at coachellaproduce.com or call 760-534-1139.

San Pablo Avenue’s potential as the new central hub of Palm Desert is only just beginning to be realized, and these markets are a great way to be introduced to all that the street has to offer. With its reimagined pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly design, San Pablo lends itself to exploration. While you’re there, be sure to visit the many shops and restaurants that call San Pablo Avenue home and are worthy of your support as well:
