A popular event with residents and tourists alike for more than a quarter century, Palm Desert’s Spring Concerts in the Park return on May 5 with a rousing season of musical entertainment by some of the top acts from across the region. Held every Thursday in May at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park amphitheater, this spring’s concerts will be held at a new, earlier time—6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

The new start time is a nod to the many families with young children who enjoy attending the free concert series. Families are encouraged to arrive even earlier to take advantage of the games and activities offered by Family YMCA of the Desert prior to the start of the concerts

This season’s concerts offer a mix of styles from country to classic rock. The season starts on Cinco de Mayo with a performance by Santanaways, an electrifying Latin/blues rock band that pays tribute to Santana. Tribute bands have always proven popular with concertgoers, and City event staff searches for the most authentic group possible to recreate both the look and sound of the original band. In the case of Santaways, bandleader Benito Meschoulam’s uncanny similarities to Carlos Santana in appearance and playing style helps this band deliver its authentic vibe.

Other concert series performers include Flashback Heart Attack, a nationally acclaimed 80s show from Orange County scheduled for May 12. Clad in flashy outfits and occasionally delivering a bit of choreography, Flashback Heart Attack nevertheless plays the biggest New Wave hits of the 80s with precision and respect. It’s a high-energy show the audience will long remember.

Country takes centerstage on May 19 when the Kelly Rae Band delivering crowd-pleasing tunes that will have concertgoers on their feet. Frequently booked at festivals, fairs and theme parks, the band plays a wide range of country music from Patsy Cline and George Strait to Little Big Town and Carrie Underwood.

Wrapping up the season on May 26 is Legends of Classic Rock, a killer line-up of musicians who have previously played with White Lion, Ratt, Steppenwolf, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Quiet Riot, Great White, and Dokken. If jamming to pure classic rocking tunes all night long is your thing, don’t miss this show.

While the music is the main draw, you can round out your evening by enjoying your dinner in the park, too. Food and beverage trucks will be available each week offering a variety of culinary offerings. Concertgoers may also bring picnic baskets along with blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the shows. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are prohibited at Civic Center Park, however.

Each week’s show will be signed by a certified ASL interpreter. Individuals who would benefit from this service are invited to sit in a designated area near the stage.

Palm Desert Civic Center Park is located on the northeast corner of San Pablo Avenue and Fred Waring Drive. For more information on attending the Concert in the Park series, call Palm Desert Visitor Services at 760-568-1441.
