Join The Desert Sun and National Geographic Documentary Films for a free community screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary “The Cave“.
The movie tells the real-life story of an underground hospital and its female physicians in war-torn Syria, painting a stirring portrait of courage, resilience and female solidarity.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with producers Sigrid Dyekjær & Kirstine Barfod, and Dr. Amani Ballour, who is a focal point of the film. Ballour was only 29 when her colleagues elected her to oversee the hospital known as “The Cave” in 2016. As director of the hospital, she had to run a medical facility under siege conditions: finding solutions to shortages of equipment and medicine; protecting the structure itself and ensuring the safety of patients and staff. meloMeanwhile, she continued to work as a pediatrician and assisted in surgery.
