Mid-Century Modern Architecture
in Palm Desert
Some of the finest examples of mid-century desert modern architecture can be found in Palm Desert. Long before Palm Village adopted the name Palm Desert in 1951, and incorporated in 1973, Randall Henderson and his brother Clifford, saw the destination resort possibilities of the desert agricultural community. Along with a few entrepreneurial friends, including the famous ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, they developed Shadow Mountain Resort. Shadow Mountain Resort opened in December 1948 and boasted a long, low clubhouse made out of concrete block and wide windows looking out to a figure-eight shaped, 320,000-gallon swimming pool. Occasionally Olympic swimming star Esther Williams entertained with aquatic shows and other celebrities including William (Hopalong Cassidy) Boyd, Bing Crosby, and James Franciscus would be among the guests at this recreational community. To this day, the Shadow Mountain pool is a popular attraction.

As the area grew in popularity, many sought to build second homes in Palm Desert and gave some of the finest architects of the era free reign to realize their dream. Bill Cody, Albert Frey, William Krisel, Donald Wexler, Walter White, E. Stewart Williams, John Outcault, and R. M. Schindler were in demand for a design aesthetic that became known as Desert Modernism. Each had their own interpretation but commonalities included the vast use of glass to draw in the desert landscape, clean lines, natural, and manmade materials as well as indoor/outdoor living spaces.
The unique requirements of desert living — light, heat, and wind — came into play through the selection of materials, floor plans, and techniques that distinguish residential, commercial, civic, religious, and institutional buildings in Palm Desert. Many of these buildings still exist today close to their original form preserving the mid-century modern style as it enjoys a new-found popularity.
